World Refugee Day is June 20th, 2020. We’re honored to be a part of shining a spotlight on the brave men and women who have had to leave all that they know in order to establish life somewhere else. This process of finding a new home is not just like moving down the block. It requires crossing borders, making impossible choices, mounds of paperwork and forms, and hopefully – maybe after years of waiting – being accepted into a third country for resettlement and a permanent, safe home.
But the truth of the matter is that very few refugees will actually be resettled to a third, safe country.
In fact, less than 1% will be given the chance to resettle. For the rest, families often endure years – an average of 17 – in crowded camps, with barely enough food to survive. Some will finally return to their home country, when and if the situation changes. Others will be trafficked, imprisoned or drowned at sea trying to find another place of refuge.
“Given the record numbers of people needing safety from war, conflict and persecution and the lack of political solutions to these situations, we urgently need countries to come forward and resettle more refugees,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. (SOURCE)
